Tom Canning

Tom Canning is a leading Commercial Excellence Advisor and NED working with the world's largest PE funds.

Prior to that he was the Chief Commercial Officer at Zellis, the UK’s largest HR and Payroll platform, and held multiple leadership roles at Flexera a global software and cloud management technology company.

Tom has a vast amount of experience in B2B software sales, marketing, customer success and strategy. Having lived in and worked across EMEA, APAC and North America he has a truly global perspective on both transformation and growth   initiatives. He also has a wealth of experience in private equity having worked with Thoma Bravo, Ontario Teacher Pension Plan, KKR, TA Associates, Bain Capital and APAX Partners

Tom is now working with a small number of PE backed businesses to identify commercial excellence and value creation opportunities pre-deal and to drive transformation and growth post-acquisition.

 

During his four years at Zellis Tom was a key member of the group executive team and played a pivotal role in Bain’s successful sale of the business to APAX partners. He completely transformed the commercial organisation more than doubling sales and tripling bookings per quota bearing head. Whilst in parallel building a customer success organisation from the ground up and moving NPS positively more than 90 points

Before his work at Zellis Tom spent nearly two decades at Flexera playing key roles in its journey from sub $100M in revenue to more than $500M. Tom held several executive roles at Flexera including SVP of EMEA, SVP of Strategy at the company HQ in Chicago and seven years building the business in APAC. These roles all featured turning around regional growth, building new categories and the formation of new sales divisions. He also successfully helped build a growth strategy and oversaw the acquisition and integration of five companies.

Tom has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester University and away from work he enjoys travelling and runs an animal rescue with his wife and two children.

Partnering with shareholders and the exec team he focuses on areas such as go-to-market strategy, sales incentives and coverage model, marketing effectiveness, customer success and sales operations.
